Tailor-made Concrete

RMC Readymix (India) Limited is a joint venture company between the RMC Group p.l.c. of UK and Hathway Investment Limited - a Rajan Raheja Group enterprise. The company aims to promote the concept and develop the use of ready mixed concrete all over India by setting up strategically located batching plants, built to the highest international standards. Operations of RMC Readymix (India) Limited began in India by setting up three state-of-the-art batching plants at Taloja & Mahape in Navi Mumbai and Bandra, Mumbai. Ready mixed concrete is a new idea for the construction industry in India. RMC Readymix (India) Limited is the vehicle, which brings to doorsteps, ready mixed concrete produced to the highest international quality standards.

Plant and equipment:Ready mixed concrete has an enormous amount of technological input. Therefore RMC Radymix (India) Ltd. utilises only the state-of-the-art computerised batching plants. These machineries are of internationally proven standards and guarantee that the concrete produced, batch after batch, has uniform consistent quality.

Raw Materials:The raw materials used in the concrete from RMC Readymix are tested stringently for their inherent properties. Its suppliers themselves have to comply with and satisfy the high level of quality assurance standards set by the company.

Technology: RMC Readymix brings to India, the knowledge and experience in the field of ready mixed concrete it has gained over the past five decades from its operations across the globe. World class systems, which include the very latest developments in statistical analysis, are used to control the quality of concrete produced.

Product: RMC Readymix (India) Limited offers the unique flexibility of providing tailor-made concrete suited for different applications. Thus the customer has the option to use Fibre Reinforced Concrete which improves crack control and abrasion resistance, Coloured Concrete for better aesthetics, Enhanced Concrete incorporating fly-ash or G.G.B.F.S. to improve durability of structures subjected to aggressive environment, CSF Concrete (Condensed Silica Fume) for high strength/high performance structures or Temperature Controlled Concrete to prevent thermal cracking in thick sections like mass foundations,

Aggregate Crushing Plant: RMC Readymix (India) Ltd. has announced the launch of its first Aggregate Crushing Plant in Chennai. The crushing plant is situated on freehold land near Keerapakkam village, which is approximately 30 kms south of Chennai. The company has purchased the assets of an Australian/Indian joint venture company, Napco Astec Limited, which includes a Crushing Plant.

Under an agreement with a local quarry operator, RMC Readymix will obtain stone from a local quarry to crush in its new plant. The plant consists of 2 crusher and 5 screens capable of producing a range of stones, (Jelly) in different sizes. The plant is rated at 150 tons per hour with a target production of 250,000 tons per annum. According to Mr.John Wilkinson, President & CEO of RMC Readymix (India) Limited, " The principal reason for this investment is to ensure the continuity of supply and quality of raw material. We believe that there is a very big opportunity for large-scale aggregate producers to supply aggregates for major projects, roads and rail ballast as well as meet local demand. Worldwide, RMC Readymix is a major producer of aggregates for use in the heavy building materials sector. The acquisition of this plant represents a natural extension to our developing Indian business."

The overall size of the investment in this project is approximately over Rs.5 crores. RMC Readymix plans to invest Rs.1.40 crores in improvements at the crushing site which will include modifications to improve the size and the shape of the produced stone as well as purchasing new loading equipment and trucks to transport the stone from the quarry to the crushing plant.

Mr. John Wilkinson is the President and CEO of RMC’s India operations.Mr. Wilkinson has 25 years of experience in Ready Mixed Concrete and Aggregate business of RMC Group. Prior to joining RMC Readymix (India) Ltd., Mr. Wilkinson was the General Manager-Director of RMC Aggregates, Northern Ltd. (UK). In RMC Readymix (India), he is responsible for all ready mixed concrete business and any future diversifications.

TI Diamond Chain Limited is a member of the highly diversified Murugappa Group of companies with a turnover of about Rs.3700 crore. TIDC was established in 1960 in collaboration with a world leader in precision drive chains - Diamond Chain co. USA. This collaboration has given TIDC access to an accumulated expertise of over hundred years and also to have latest chain technology. The company was established in the 60’s as a backward integration unit of TI cycles for manufacture of bicycle chains in technical tie up with Diamond USA. It diversified into heavy duty chains in the 70s. in the eighties, the company developed motorcycle chains in house for Japanese two wheelers and engineering class chains. It was the first Indian chain company to receive API certification. In the nineties, it entered into export market. It was again the first Indian chain company to receive ISO 9002. Its motorcycle chain plant is certified for ISO 9002. The company has set up 100% export oriented unit for agricultural chains.

Product: The manufacturing program at TIDC covers a wide spectrum of chains; precision automotive chains, chains for timing and power transmission applications and elevator chains for cement, fertiliser, and other engineering industries.

Infrastructure and manufacturing set up at TIDC include agricultural chain division at Kakkalur, timing chain division at Kakkalur, motorcycle division at Hyderabad and light duty division and heavy duty division at Chennai. The entire manufacturing and quality procedures are geared towards manufacturing chains with four most distinct advantages. like greater fatigue and tensile strength, longer wear life, maximum working load capability and maximum impact and crushing strength. TIDC factories are equipped with state of the art manufacturing technology ensuring that its products have kept pace with the world leaders.

Be it edge bevelling and sizing mill for maintaining close tolerances on cold rolled strips or the advanced multislide autoforming machine for producing perfectly rounded bushes or be it the multistation cold extrusion machine for producing high precision rollers or the continuous rotary retort furnace for consistency in quality of heat treatment, TIDC has always been committed to deliver to the customers the best value for money.

Internationally recognized quality: TIDC is equipped with sophisticated quality control facilities for ensuring that the quality of every chain that leaves the factory meets the stringent specifications set by the product design to testing of finished products. This has helped TIDC to conform to world standards set by USA, UK, Germany and Japan. The quality systems and procedures have been certified to ISO 9001 standards by RWTUV of Germany and to API 7 F specifications by American Petroleum Institute for its Oil Field chains. This has resulted in the export of chains to fiercely competitive markets like the UK, USA, Australia, New Zeland, Germany and many other countries in Europe, Africa, South America and the Middle East.

Financials: TIDC achieved a turnover of Rs.117 crore in the last financial year (1999-2000) against Rs.109 crore in the previous year. In spite of a low growth in turnover the operating profit is higher at Rs.20.19 crore (Rs.19.29 crore) in the previous year representing a growth of 4.67%.

TIDC has an extensive distribution network, which helps it to service the needs of the automotive as well as the industrial clients with equal felicity. In the domestic market TIDC is the OEM supplier to all the 2 & 3 wheeler manufacturers. Its leading brands Diamond Super, Racing Special and diamond kits enjoy a premium image due to quality of its products and reach through 600 dealers serviced by 17 depots across the country. For the industrial segment TIDC approaches customers with a complete solution, namely design, selection and supply of chains. TIDC has a technical tie up with Tsubaki - the world’s largest manufacturer of chains, which provides it with a distinctive edge in terms of technical expertise and superior product design. Its ECC division which started with conveyor chains today supplies to important customers like ONGC, Ingersoll Rand, Revathi CP towards import substitute. There has been a major thrust on exports and the fact that 35% of the turnover is from exports indicates the determined march towards its vision of being a world class player and prominent global player in power transmission products.
