Larsen & Tubro: India's Construction Giant

L&T offers turnkey construction services and engineered turnkey industrial and infrastructure projects in civil, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation engineering through ECC — its Engineering, Construction and Contracts Division. The Headquarters of the Division is located at Chennai.

ECC’s construction capabilities have secured wide recognition including ISO certification in various areas - safety engineering, formwork, and human resource development. ECC’s workshops at Chennai and transmission line factories at Pondicherry and Pithampur are also ISO-certified. Further, ECC has secured the highest CR1 Rating from the Investment Information and Credit Rating Agency.

ECC’s business activities are executed by twelve Strategic Business Units (SBUs), which formulate policies, perform marketing functions and ensure project execution to international benchmarks of quality and time. Domestic operations are conducted through seven regional offices - at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai. Area offices overseas conduct international operations.

ECC undertakes construction of mega projects like ports, docks, jetties, irrigation and hydroelectric projects, reactor containment structures, turbines and ancillary structures for nuclear power plants, including all types of geo-technical engineering and construction.

ECC’s experience covers construction of prestressed reactor containment structures, turbine buildings, circulating water systems, intake and outfall structures, fast-breeder test reactors (FBTR), radio metallurgical and radio chemistry laboratories, ventilation stacks and other auxiliary structures for nuclear power projects.

Geo-Tech Services: ECC offers comprehensive services in geo-technical engineering, including soil investigation and recommendations for economical and speedy construction of foundations. Areas of specialisation cover design and construction of: ored and driven piles; Well foundations; Diaphragm walls; Ground improvement works; Dewatering; ECC’s services are complemented by sophisticated soil and concrete laboratories and site testing facilities.

Development Projects: This Business Unit targets projects which will be executed on principles of Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT), Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT), Build-Own-Lease-and-Transfer (BOLT) and Build-Own-Operate-Share-and-Transfer (BOOST) and other variants. These projects could typically be promoted by consortiums comprising private and public sector companies, financial organisations and multinationals.

This Business Unit draws on ECC’s traditional strengths and wide-ranging experience in executing projects on EPC basis. These are being executed through the Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) and Joint Ventures (JVs) below.

L&T Infocity Ltd (LTIL) is a JV of L&T and Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Limited (APIIC). The company is developing HITEC City (Hyderabad Information Technology Engineering Consultancy City), spread over an area of 158 acres in a phased manner spanning 8-10 years.

HITEC City is planned as an integrated techno-township of office area, commercial space, hotel and convention centre, club-house, petrol station with all infrastructural facilities like substation, road network, parks, rock gardens, sewage disposal, etc.

The operation and maintenance of all services in HITEC City is also being undertaken by LTIL.

Narmada Infrastructure Construction Enterprise Ltd (NICE) is an SPV formed by L&T for design, construction, maintenance and operation of the second Narmada bridge at Zadeshwar in Gujarat. This project was undertaken on BOT basis. The scope of the project included the construction of a 1.4km-long bridge, adjacent to the first bridge, along with 4.5km of approach roads. The bridge reduces travelling time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The concession period including the construction period will be 15 years.

L&T Western India Toll Bridge Ltd: This SPV was formed by L&T to handle the construction of the two-lane bridge across river Watrak on NH8, including the approach roads near village Kheda in the Ahmedabad-Vadodara section of NH8 on BOT basis. The scope of this project includes the construction of a 335m-long bridge and around 9.2km of approach roads. Construction is likely to be completed by 2001.
