Construction Cost Indices for August 2002Construction
Industry Development Council (CIDC) has been computing Construction Cost Indices
(CCI) for the 4 metros and Hyderabad and Bangalaore cities. The indices are computed
for the construction works in Building, Bridges, Dams, Medium Industry, Maintenance,
Roads, Mineral Plant, Urban Infrastructure, Power, Railways and Transmissions
sectors. The base year is January 1998 with the base index being 100. The
month of August to September every year generally witnesses a reduction in construction
activities. The month of August saw a decline in cost of both cement and steel,
the two most important materials used in construction works. The cost of cement
has decreased by (-)2.5% to (-)8% over the country, depending on the region. Steel
prices have also declined by (-)1% to (-)2%. But the construction cost indices
has shown a decrease by (-) 0.12% only. This is because
the labour cost has increased and is also reflected in the Consumer Price Indices
(CPI) released by Central Statistical Organization (CSO). The CPI for Urban Non-Manual
Employees [CPI (UNME)] are as follows (base 1984-1985=100):-
